Chiropractic Care for Women Who Are Pregnant or Trying to Conceive

Chiropractic supports your body's natural abilities to function. The nervous system serves as a master communications hub for all parts of your body, including the reproductive system. And when your spine is in line, it helps your entire body function more effectively, which is part of the reason that chiropractic is especially helpful during pregnancy.

Prenatal and postnatal care are two of Dr. Katie's primary areas of interest. She is certified in the Webster Technique, which balances women's pelvises during pregnancy. Dr. Katie uses tables that adjust to pregnant women's bodies, and practices techniques that avoid unnecessary abdominal pressure. She also provides women with exercises and stretches that are safe to do during pregnancy.

Pregnant women benefit in multiple ways from chiropractic care during pregnancy. It helps to:

- Control nausea
- Maintain a healthy pregnancy
- Optimize fetal positioning
- Prevent cesarean delivery
- Reduce labor and delivery time
- Reduce pain in the back, neck or joints

The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association recommends chiropractic care for women throughout their pregnancies. It helps to establish and maintain pelvic balance, which increases the likelihood of babies moving into the proper position for birth, and decreases the likelihood of difficult labor and interventions such as cesarean sections. A study in the July/August 2002 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, for example, revealed a success rate of 82 percent in babies turning vertex - the most desirable baby positioning - when women's chiropractors practiced the Webster Technique. When babies are breech-positioned, the Webster Technique may be effective as early as the eighth month of pregnancy, according to the study.
